Why America Can’t Ignore Singing Contest Programs

A dream behind the microphone

Why do we love these shows so much? NPR’s The Record offers the answer. The fans consider themselves hard workers. They look at it and think, “Maybe I can do that too.”

This is the American dream starting from scratch. CMT’s Next Superstar Simon Lythgow points out that voting is very democratic. It feels American.

Almost all of us have sung a song out loud in the shower. We combed. When we watch a singing performance, we imagine ourselves on stage. The lights are bright. They blind us. Our hearts are beating. We think, “I am of no use to them. But just wait until they hear my song.”

Singing competitions make dreams come true. They really do more than any other reality show.

A true star, a true beginning

Consider click-through rates. One Direction’s Harry, Niall, Louis, Liam and Zayn kick off ‘The X Factor’. This is how boy bands are made now.

Jennifer Hudson won the Oscar. This was after she became famous by appearing on American Idol. Miranda Lambert went from third-time Nashville Star finalist to CMA Female Vocalist of the Year, an unprecedented five-game winning streak.

These are not just participants. They are idols.

Boil the effect

And then there’s Susan Boyle. The ladies of Britain’s Got Talent.

When she finally started singing, Simon Cowell’s jaw dropped. The audience laughed and stood up in unison. They applaud. they cried. The audience stood and applauded.

His debut album “I Dreamed a Dream” stayed at the top of the Billboard 200 for six weeks.

We all dream of what it would be like to be a star. Singing opens the door to extraordinary dreamers. That’s why we’re watching.

But let’s face it. Even if Susan Boyle crashed and burned, this would still be a fun story.
