How Ivan Sutherland’s Sketchpad Built the Modern Computer Interface

It started with a light pen and a cathode-ray tube.

In 1961, a young MIT graduate student named Ivan Sutherland wanted to make a computer that could talk back visually. He didn’t just want text on a screen. He wanted to draw.

The result was Sketchpad, the first interactive computer-graphics program. It wasn’t just a toy. It was the prototype for everything you use today. Every time you click an icon, drag a window, or zoom in on a map, you are using logic invented by Sutherland.

The Hardware That Made It Possible

You can’t understand Sketchpad without looking at the machine it lived on. The TX-2.

This beast lived at MIT’s Lincoln Laboratory. It had 320 KB of memory. To put that in perspective, that’s nothing by modern standards. A single photo from your phone has more data than that entire computer.

But for 1961, it was a monster. It had twice the memory of the biggest commercial machines available. It powered a 23-cm CRT display.

Sutherland’s idea was simple. Use a “light pen” on that screen. Touch the glass. The computer sees it. The computer responds.

This was one of the first graphical user interfaces (GUIs). Before this, you punched cards. You waited. You hoped. With Sketchpad, you drew. You saw the result instantly.

“Sketchpad: A Man-Machine Graphical Communications System.”

That was the title of his 1963 doctoral thesis. It sounds dry. The impact was explosive.

How It Actually Worked

The process was complicated. Not because of code, but because of physics.

Sketchpad relied on electrical pulses. The light pen had a photoelectric cell. The CRT had an electronic gun firing from the back of the tube.

When you touched the screen, the timing of the pulse told the computer exactly where your pen was. It converted the screen into a sketchpad.

A cursor appeared. You drew lines. You moved them. You changed their size. You used computer switches to control the ratio.

It was primitive. It was also revolutionary.

Why This Matters Now

You don’t need to know the circuitry to feel the legacy.

Sketchpad established the vocabulary of visual computing. It taught computers how to model objects on a screen.

That logic powers:

– Business dashboards
– Entertainment software

It also led directly to computer-aided design (CAD). Engineers still use those principles to build cars, planes, and bridges.

The Lab and The Legacy

Sutherland didn’t stop at MIT.

In 1964, he collaborated with David Evans at the University of Utah. They started one of the first educational computer-graphics labs in Salt Lake City.

This wasn’t just about drawing pretty pictures. It was about teaching computers to understand geometry. It was about making the machine an extension of the human mind.

Most of the software we use today grew out of that early experiment. The mouse? It’s the direct descendant of the light pen. The icon? It’s a direct descendant of Sketchpad’s symbols.

We live in a world Sutherland imagined. We just forgot to thank him for it.
