William Shockley: The Man Who Built Silicon Valley and Ignited a Controversy

He changed the world with a tiny switch. Then he tried to change it with hatred.

William B. Shockley’s name is etched into the foundation of every smartphone, laptop, and smart device you use. He co-invented the transistor. But his legacy is a jagged scar on the history of science, defined as much by his later bigotry as his earlier brilliance.

Born in London in 1910, Shockley moved to the U.S. for his education. He studied physics at Caltech and MIT, graduating with a Ph.D. in 1936. He landed at Bell Telephone Laboratories, a place where some of the most important technological shifts of the 20th century would happen.

He didn’t just study physics there. He obsessed over semiconductors.

During World War II, he served as director of research for the U.S. Navy’s Antisubmarine Warfare Operations Research Group. It was rigorous work. Analyzing data. Finding patterns in chaos. But the war ended. And Shockley returned to Bell Labs with a singular mission.

He wanted to control electronic signals using solid-state materials. Vacuum tubes were bulky. They burned out. They were inefficient. He knew there was a better way.

The Transistor Breakthrough

The breakthrough didn’t happen in a vacuum. It happened in collaboration, and then in conflict.

Shockley worked with John Bardeen and Walter H. Brattain. In 1947, the trio invented the point-contact transistor. It was clumsy. Unreliable. But it worked. By 1948, they had developed the junction transistor. A more effective device.

This invention replaced the vacuum tube. It ushered in the age of microminiature electronics.

For this work, Shockley shared the 1956 Nobel Prize in Physics. It was the pinnacle of his scientific career.

But the story takes a dark turn in 1955. Shockley left Bell Labs to establish the Shockley Semiconductor Laboratory in Palo Alto, California. He joined Beckman Instruments, Inc. for the role.

This lab is often cited as the birthplace of Silicon Valley. It attracted some of the brightest young engineers in the country. But Shockley’s management style was notoriously difficult. He alienated his best talent. Eight of his employees left to form Fairchild Semiconductor. Those eight would go on to spawn dozens of other companies.

He was building an ecosystem of innovation while simultaneously eroding his own workforce.

Academic Years and Controversy

In 1958, Shockley became a lecturer at Stanford University. By 1963, he was the first Poniatoff professor of engineering science there. He remained emeritus until 1974.

He also wrote Electrons and Holes in Semiconductors in 1950. A seminal text.

But during the late 1960s, his public persona shifted. He became a figure of intense controversy. His views on race and intelligence were widely debated and widely condemned.

He argued that standardized intelligence tests reflected genetic factors. He claimed these tests proved that Black individuals were intellectually inferior to whites. It wasn’t just a casual opinion. It was a core belief he promoted publicly.

He went further. He concluded that the higher reproduction rates among Black communities had a retrogressive effect on evolution.

These views were not held in a vacuum.
